Cartwheel Consultancy Limited was formed in 2002 after Tom had worked for 17 years within the Electricity Supply Industry. First as an apprentice trained cable jointer, then undertaking supervisory and project management roles, including street lighting connection and repairs.  Latterly, Tom went on to work in the training department managing the apprenticeship scheme and developing the NVQ Framework before requesting voluntary redundancy in order to forge his own career path in training and assessment on a national basis.

Tom has a BA (Hons) in Business and a PGCE (Post Graduate Certificate in Education) in addition to his competencies and qualifications relevant to the industry (full details below).

Apprenticeship Scheme Manager, Operational Training Engineer and Internal Verifier/Assessor for the Operational Training and Development Department

My role and responsibilities centred on the development and delivery of adhoc training and development as required for both internal colleagues and external companies. For example, sub station access, LV switching, faultfinding and electrical safety awareness. Together with the management of the apprenticeship framework with full responsibility for organising and developing training plans and their implementation to ensure milestones of achievement were attained to National Standards. Also responsible for all aspects of the Adult Learning Inspectorate requirements on behalf of the company and gaining ISO accreditations.

I held the position for twelve months in the Huddersfield region until October 1999. This involved the management of a significant section of the £5 million street lighting connection and fault repair business of 4 local authorities, with direct responsibility for 8 employees.

Electrical Cable Jointer

Following a comprehensive 4-year cable jointing apprenticeship, I had ten years electrical cable jointing experience up to and including 33kv solid and polymeric jointing. This included working on new build projects as well as fault repair work. In addition I made myself available for numerous working parties and provided cover for Production and Project Managers. This enhanced my managerial, organisational skills with health, safety and welfare being consistently intrinsic to my activities.
